Beans are in the legume family and have a new profile. It was a staple in my family while growing up and still is in my own family. Everyone, the rich, the poor, young, and the old are interested in good health. People are doing a variety of exercises to become fit. They are also changing their eating habits and the foods they are eating.

Why beans?

Meat eating is lessened because of the image it portrays with saturated fats. People are turning to alternative substitutes and dried legumes fit the bill. Dried legumes are beans, lentils, peas, and chick-peas (garbanzos). These have a very good reputation for keeping you slim, making you healthy, are readily available, easy to prepare, versatile to eat as beans or can be used to pair with other foods. They are high in protein and very economical.

Beans are high in fiber, and carbohydrates so if you want to lose weight beans should be a part of the foods you include in your meal plans. A high fiber, high carbohydrate diet

Helps you to lose excess weight. Beans when included in your diet have few calories, and they provide satiety making you feel full. Beans do not have any fat calories. For example a half of a cup of baked beans contains only 150 calories and one cup of cooked kidney beans has about 100 calories.

Beans help to keep blood sugar levels steady and is key to keeping diabetes under control. Between ½ and ¾ cup of beans eaten per day has shown to significantly improve blood sugar control.

Beans provide another benefit for people with diabetes who tend to develop heart disease. Eating more beans will help to keep their cholesterol  level low thus reducing their risk.

Beans are a great source of essential vitamins and minerals. 1 serving (1/2 cup) of black beans contains 128 micro-grams translated to 32 percent of the Daily value for Folate, a B vitamin that may lower risk of heart disease and fight birth defects. That same amount of beans provides 2 milligrams of iron, 11 percent of the Daily Value and 305 milligrams of potassium or 9 percent of the Daily Value. Potassium is a mineral that is effective to help control blood pressure naturally.

Beans get a bad rap for causing gas. If that is the reason you are avoiding eating them, you may add ginger or soak them in water. Discard the water that the beans soaked in then add fresh water to cook the beans. These methods of cooking may help reduce the gas forming results of beans.
